Thailand Flood - 2011

thailand alert17 Nov 2011 - The flooding situation has eased in parts of Bangkok and some outlying areas. Flood water are receding, but many parts of greater Bangkok still have stagnant flood water.

Water bourne diseases have become a problem and my continue to be a problem for weeks.

Check / confirm any travel plans. Many low-cost accommodations in Chon Buri, Pattaya, Hua Hin. Cha am, Kanchanaburi and surrounds are fully booked.

In a telephone conversation today, a Thai friend who has been staying in a hotel says he will not be able to return to his house in Nontaburi for (estimated) two more weeks

They claim it is the worst flood in 50 years. The Chao Phaya river has flooded, inundating much of the Chao Phaya basin. Large sections of the historic cities of Ayuttaya and Sukhothai were flooded and as of Nov 5, 2011 are still under water.

Sections of mountain roadway from as far north as Nan Province have caved off into the valleys below. Poorly prepared roadbeds have crumbled all over Thailand.

One section of the railroad near Lamphang has been so severely compromised it may be unsafe for months -- even years.

Flooding of major industrial parks has put hundreds-of-thousands out of work. Production on everything for hard disk drives to automobiles has stopped.

In trying to protect Central Bangkok from flooding, officials have ordered drainage canal flood gates remain closed. As a result, billions of cubic meters of water cover huge areas around Bangkok. Annual peak high tides have compounded problems for the capitol city.

The water is filthy, contaminated by raw sewage, dead animals, dangerous crocodiles and poisonous snakes.

Don Muang Airport, the domestic airport and Air Force Base, is under 2.5 meters of water. News coverage shows aircraft belly-deep in water.

Subarnabhumi Airport is operational and the government is making every effort with sand-bag dikes as high as 4 meters to keep it that way.
