Some Thai Weights and Measures

  • baht is an ancient weight measure. It is currently used for precious metals.
  • 1 baht = 1/2 oz.(avdp) = 15 grams

  • 1 kabiet = 3/16 inch = 5 mm (perhaps the length of rice grain?)

  • 1 sauk = 0.5 meters (traditionally, measures as fingertip to elbow)
  • 1 sen = 40 meters
  • wah, ngan and rai are units of area measurement and usually associated with building sizes or land.
  • talang = square, i.e., 1 talang medt = 1 square meter
  • 1 wah = 4.78 sq yards = 4 sq. metres
  • 1 ngan = 400 sq. meters
  • 1 rai = 1,600 sq.metres = 4 ngan = .39 acre
