Thais are creative, artistic and patient. This is a great combination for making colorful, unique and truly Thai items.
Thai Silk is one of the most popular things to buy
in Thailand. The prices are reasonable and the quality excellent.
Cotton is also a good value. You will see colorful cotton
fabric in many markets. This is used for men's and women's sarongs. The fabrics can also be used for coverings or curtains.
In addition, cotton shirts and blouses are a bargain. The
traditional Thai farmers' shirt is comfortable and practical. Attractive, light weight Chinese style cotton shirts and blouses are a good buy as well.
There are intricately embroidered triangular shaped pillowsand lovely delicate silk pillowcases. If space is a problem, the cushions can be bought un-stuffed and re-stuffed at home.
Lanna style fabrics from the north are unique and make great
souvenirs, especially real hilltribe silver.
Tailor made clothes are a bargain, but be careful. First,
never go in a place with a tout. Second, don't go to tailor shops recommended by tuk-tuk drivers. Third, many shops offering 24-hour service with complete suits are of poor quality.
If possible, get a recommendation from a Thai friend
or a long time expatriate.
