Touring Thailand - Reality vs Importance
Thailand is one of those places that is literally overrun with reality and pragmatism. And lucky for us all, it's cheap. A taxi ride from Los Angeles International Airport to Disneyland will set you back around US$ 70 or so. That's about Bt 3,000 in Thailand, which will get you a chauffeured air conditioned van stocked with cold water, sodas, plus a tour guide ... and will get you about 700 km down the road.
A Motel 6 on most interstate highways in the USA are, I've heard, about US$ 60. For that, You can enjoy a 4 star hotel in most Thai cities and a weekend stay in a tourist class lodging.
Tour guides are everywhere in Thailand. You can hire them by the day. And they:
- Speak English
- Are good with kids
- Know how to size up a Thai restaurant
- Know how and what food to order
- Can book rooms
- Settle accounts
- Plan your day
- Restock the van with sodas and munchies
If that ain't worth a few hundred Baht to you, you're probably going to want to switch channels right about now.
Still here? Good!
What we are calling a tour is much more than a ride to the Royal Palace and back to the hotel. That's what taxis are for.
We will try and put together some good suggestions for you. But we strongly recommend that you use the resources available in Thailand.
And as you create your itinerary, especially if you are not sure about a destination or activity, plan secondary options
- A well planned itinerary can save you more than it costs.
- You don't have to be a slave to any specific plan
- You don't have to get oversold by tour operators
Figure out what you want, hire the right people and enjoy this lovely country and the wonderful people who live here.
