Mountain Bike Touring in Thailand

Adventure touring by bicycle in Thailand can take many forms. Rides and trails of all levels of difficulty are available. Several national parks have trails set aside for mountain bikes. Easy rides on mostly flat and dedicated paths are available in Sukothai and Ayuttaya.

Bicycle - Chiang Mai

Lots of riding opportunities here. If you want a challenge, ride to the temple at Doi Suthep. Just make sure your bike has a low gear. For sheer luxury in lazy cycling, have someone haul you and the bike to the top of Doi Inthanon.

Another popular ride for experienced cyclists is a 50 km jaunt from Doi Inthanon to Mae Cham to Ob Luang Gorge.

Other rides include the Chiang Dao caves and Mae SA Valley. Also along the Mae Kok River which runs from the Burmese border in Thatorn to the Mekong River.

Bicycle - Mae Hong Son

Pai has more than its fair share of nature's beauty and some of it is nicely seen by bicycle. Tours can take you to hill tribe villages, hot springs and waterfalls. Just watch out for the elephants and water buffalo since that is where the trails come from.

Bicycle - Petchabun

Thung Salang Luang National Park has a variety of trails, some long and difficult that will challenge the experienced rider. The park is rugged with limestone, slate and hardpan hills. The southern section is meadows and forest with patches of evergreens. Seventeen species of mammal including elephant, tiger, gaur, barking deer, wild dog, wild pig and langur. Best animal watching is near the large salt lick at Pong Sai in the northwest and Pong Thung Phaya in the southwest. Bird life is abundant as well with almost 200 species.

Bicycle - Nakhon Nayok

Cycling Khao Yai

Khao Yai is a huge national park which is accessible from several provinces. Khao Yai has more than a dozen marked trails and offers much more than mountain biking trails. At over 2000 sq km has varied features with waterfalls, foothills, evergreen forests, grasslands and mountains that reach 1000 mt elevation. Wildlife includes elephants, gibbon, tigers, leopards and Malaysian sun bears.

Petchaburi & Prachuap Khirikhan

Just south of Bangkok is Kaeng Krachan National Park; Thailand's largest at almost 3,000 sq km. Kaeng Krachan has a reservoir lake, waterfalls, caves and mountains. A vast evergreen forest with scientifically valuable plants supports a variety of wildlife that includes wild elephants.

Cycling Chantaburi

Khao Khitchakut in the northern part of Chantaburi province is small yet has gaur, elephant, bear, sambar and barking deer as well as many bird species.

Cycling Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi has several areas for riding. A bit isolated but beautiful Chalerm Rattanakosin National Park has one trail that runs alongside a stream and passes through Tham Than Lot Noi cavern before emerging in a forested ravine; then climbs to a waterfall and another cavern.

Cycling Sukhothai & Ayuttaya

Both cities are ancient capitols and have spectacular ruins. Sukothai is especially peaceful and a bicycle is the ideal way to tour the site. Ayuttaya has more than its share of beautiful temples, interesting ruins and museums. A bicycle is an ideal way around the various venues of this wonderful city.
