Phuket Local Transportation Warnings
For reasons beyond comprehension, the authorities who control Phuket seemed determined to destroy the tourist industry through greed and corruption. We all know that many developing countries have corruption, but several areas of this magnificent island have elevated the practice to obscene levels.
Travelers to Phuket should stay alert for a number of travel scams and rip-offs.
Phuket Tuk-Tuk Cartel
Tuk-Tuks of various designs serve as a convenient means of transportation in many cities. The operators in Phuket are organized into a cartel style organization that relies on violence and intimidation to maintain an outrageous fee structure .. while eliminating competition.
In Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Tuk-Tuk prices range from Bt 20. "Baht buses" in Pattaya start at Bt 10 for a regular route.
But in Phuket, there seems to be no standard routes. And prices start at around Bt 300. Tourists who protest the fares may be subject to violent attacks.
Location, location, location seems to be just as important for transportation service parking as it is for real estate. The motorbike and tuk-tuk mafias have taken the concept to a new level. One French family was injured in an attack by a taxi operator because they dared to park on his turf.
If you decide to engage a Tuk Tuk, be sure you have established the price before getting in the vehicle. If you have a conflict over your fare, call the Tourist Police at 219-878 .. call 1699 for emergencies.
