Better Prices for Longer Stays in a location
Serviced apartments can be a realistic alternative to other types of accommodations for those planning to stay in one location for a month or more.
Besides extending a budget, the serviced apartment is usually more comfortable than a hotel room.
They tend to be self contained "neighborhoods".
Often called condotels, serviced apartments that rent by the month are common in the larger cities in Thailand.
Basically, they are living accommodations with dining facilities on the property; offer maid service with the room rental or as an ancillary service.
One-room studio style apartment are most common. They should have air-con, furniture, linens and sometimes, table settings. A sitting area with chairs and a table, a refrigerator and full bathroom are standard.
Serviced apartments are generally located convenient to government offices, universities and urban office buildings. A full range of services appealing to middle class Thais will be located nearby.
Expect the neighborhood to have eateries, mini-marts, laundries, pubs and internet services. These services are often located on the ground floor of the serviced apartment.
Some serviced apartments are quite luxurious and have separate bedrooms, will be in hi-rise buildings with lifts, security and lobby areas. And to many, a serviced apartment feels more like home than a hotel does.
Prices will vary depending on location and quality, but expect to pay Bt 5,000/month and up ... and to pay in advance. A good rule of thumb is 10 x daily room rate in a comparable hotel.
Electricity, telephone and water are normally charged separately. Bt 5-7 per telephone call (usually limited to 15 minutes per call) and Bt 5 per kwh for electricity are common. Water should be no more than Bt 500/mo.
Services may be fewer than available at a hotel, but many condotels offer room service and ancillary services.
Caveats:
Be sure you understand what you are agreeing to. Seek out referrals. Avoid paying a deposit if possible as several days may be required to get a refund. Unscrupulous managers will try to keep deposits.
Expect more noise and less privacy. Basically, you are living in a neighborhood, unique as it may be.
