Koh Kret - Island in the Chao Phaya

thailand travel Koh Kret island, easily accessible from Bangkok, is mainly populated by the oldest settlement of Mon people in Thailand.

Most of the people here make their living as potters. Some of their work can be see at the Ancient Mon Pottery Center on the island. As you walk around Koh Kret, you will also see the locals engaged in their craft.

Wat Paramai Yikawat, usually just called Wat Mon, has a marble Mon style Buddha image.

A worthile rest stop is the large Thai style pastry shop. Watch a demonstration of pasteries being made. All are low-cal, of course!

How to Get There:
First, take the Chao Phraya River Express to Nonthaburi. There you change to another River Express boat with a green flag. The boats run from 06:30 to 07:30 and 16:30 to 18:30.

You can also join a cruise to Koh Kret. It leaves at 09:00 and comes back at 15:00. Go to the Maharat Pier to get the cruise.

On Sundays, also from the Maharat Pier, you can catch a boat and have a tour of the island. The price for the tour is Bt 300 for adults and Bt 150 for children. It takes you to all the highlights of the island.

A visit and walking tour of Koh Kret makes a good family daytrip.
